Tech support scams, also known as helpdesk fraud, claimed many victims some years ago, in the Netherlands and abroad. The victim is contacted by an imposter offering technical support or receives a fake message from a helpdesk, supposedly at a well known IT company. Ads from scammers are shown at the top of online search results. The phone number of the scammer appears to be the real number of that bank, but it is not. This is called phone number spoofing. The fake bank employee scares the victim by saying, for example, that the victim seems to have made a suspiciously large payment, that his or her computer is no longer secure, or that the victim’s debit card or login device needs to be replaced. Next the scammer says that someone from the bank must come to the victim’s home to solve the problem or to collect the debit card or login device.
