The growth is driven by strong growth in services (+125%), bringing spending on services back to pre-corona levels. For products, there is no growth this quarter, but a contraction of 18%. At the same time, online spending on products is still at a higher level than Q1 2020 and Q1 2019 (pre-corona). This is evident from the latest figures from the Thuiswinkel Markt Monitor, the survey of online consumer spending in the Netherlands. This research is conducted by GfK, commissioned by Thuiswinkel.org and Retail Insiders and in cooperation with PostNL, Betaalvereniging Nederland and Currence. Read the full article (in Dutch).

Cost study in final phase

In the previous edition of Betaaljournaal, Miriam Osten told about the study into the costs and benefits of payments for financial institutions (in Dutch). The objective is that by the end of 2022, almost everyone in the Netherlands will be able to pay with Debit MasterCard and Visa Debit (hereafter referred to as Debit). Apart from a few tests, the PIN chain is fully ready for acceptance and processing of Debit. The banks have recently sent Debit offer letters to their acceptors. If acceptors do not object to Debit, their existing debit card contracts will be modified. To this end, the banks will make arrangements with their processors. The terminals must also be modified as part of this project. In many cases, the adjustment consists of a software upgrade and an administrative action to activate Debit on the payment terminal. In order to unburden the acceptors, the banks are making agreements on this with terminal suppliers. The expectation is that the first terminals will be fully capable of accepting Debit during the third quarter.

Communication material
Apart from updating the infrastructure, communication is another important part of the DCA project. Information material and answers to frequently asked questions have been available for some time. Now, point-of-sale materials (stickers and wobblers) are being added to make it clear to consumers (in the shops) at the point-of-sale terminal that they can also pay by debit. This POS material can be ordered free of charge at pin.nl from mid-July.

Monitoring
Finally, the project monitors the migration to debit cards. The percentage of terminals adapted for Debit is periodically being reported at an aggregated level to relevant interest groups, so that they can activate their supporters if necessary. Interest groups are kept informed via various coordination bodies (MOB WEE, Card Payment Forum, NLB).

Acceptgiro – one year to go

Currence, product owner of Acceptgiro, has announced that it will stop offering and supporting this paper-based payment product, which is more than 40 years old, on 1 June 2023.
