The Dutch Payments Association strives for an optimally effective, safe, reliable, accessible and socially efficient payment system, in which innovation is an important element

Our mission

The Dutch Payments Association (Betaalvereniging Nederland) strives for an optimally effective, safe, reliable, accessible and socially efficient payment system. To this end, the Dutch Payments Association performs services (collective tasks) that are of common interest to the members and manages those collective tasks. Its members are providers of payment services on the Dutch market: banks, payment institutions and electronic money institutions.

The Roadmap outlines the challenges and goals for Dutch payments system (in Dutch).

Important preconditions for the successful performance of our tasks are:

  • Transparency
  • Openness
  • Accessibility
  • Focus on quality

The Dutch Payments Association considers it very important to actively involve representatives of end users in its activities. In this way, the Dutch Payments Association gives substance to the social character of the payment system.

Our vision

Payment transactions in the Netherlands are virtually flawless. Millions of transactions per day in the Netherlands are efficient, safe and fast. Payment transactions are an indispensable pivot in the economy, have many stakeholders and are of great social importance. As a result, the payment system has the character of a utility function.

The Dutch Payments Association considers it of great importance to actively involve representatives of end users, including entrepreneurs and consumers, in its activities. Together with our members, we are thus giving substance to the social character of the payment system. On behalf of the sector, we are visibly involved and approachable. Together with our members, we take our social responsibility where necessary. In addition, we are open to, and stimulate, dialogue with other relevant parties involved in payment transactions.

Complex market

The large number of parties involved, the high demands on quality and the large number of transactions make payment transactions a very complex market. All relevant parties must be involved and their interests taken into account in order to achieve an affordable and well-functioning payment system.

With the advent of the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) in the euro area, standards and payment products are increasingly being set at the European level rather than at the national level. In addition, European legislation has broadened the scope for new players (in particular payment institutions) to enter the payments market.

Cooperation

Although the payments market is internationalising, national cooperation in collective non-competitive cases remains of great importance, especially to further improve the high quality of payment transactions.
To this end, we provide services that are of common interest to the members and manage these collective tasks. We pursue the following core values for the successful performance of our tasks: connecting, driven and relevant.

Core

Payment transactions are an indispensable pivot in the economy, have many stakeholders and are of great social importance. In this sense, payment transactions have the character of a utility function. The large number of parties involved, the high demands on quality and the large number of transactions make payment transactions complex. Transparency, openness and accessibility are important principles in this respect. All relevant parties must be involved and their interests taken into account in order to achieve an effective, safe, reliable, accessible and socially efficient payment system.
