6 November 2025 – Amsterdam

Informative programme on European sovereignty in payment transactions

On 6 November, the Dutch Payments Association hosted an inspiring afternoon programme in ‘de Thomas’ in Amsterdam, bringing together experts from across Europe to share insights into the rapidly-developing landscape of commercial European payment solutions.

The session opened with Arjan Bol (General Manager of the Dutch Payments Association), who introduced the theme of European sovereignty in payment transactions. The afternoon continued with a series of in-depth presentations from leading European payment initiatives.

Ivo Broeren (Country Relationship Management Lead The Netherlands at EPI Company) presented the latest developments around Wero, EPI Company’s pan-European account-to-account digital wallet. Wero is designed to enable seamless instant payments across borders and is currently active in Germany, France and Belgium, with further expansion planned to support Europe’s ambition for greater payment sovereignty.

Bizum (Spain) was then introduced by Monica Campagnet (Head of Operations & IT). Bizum is a mobile-payment service originally active in Spain, and thanks to the European Payments Alliance (EuroPA)-interoperability project now allows users to send and receive money between Spain, Portugal and Italy through connections with Portugal’s MB WAY and Italy’s Bancomat Pay.

Next, VIPPS MobilePay (Nordic region) was presented by Baard Slaattelid (Director Strategic Payment Partnership at VIPPS MobilePay). This wallet platform serves users in Norway, Denmark, Finland and Sweden and has recently joined the EuroPA alliance, enabling interoperability with southern and eastern European solutions such as Bizum and Poland’s Blik.

Finally, Blik (Poland) was introduced by Michal Szymanski (Payment Systems Expert at Blik SK a.s.). Blik is the dominant mobile-payments provider in Poland and is among the key players joining the European payments-interoperability drive to amplify cross-border reach.

After the presentations, participants enjoyed networking and further discussion over drinks.
