With giro-based payments amounts are transferred between bank accounts; no cash is exchanged
Giro-based payments are credited to or debited from bank accounts (with IBAN account numbers). These include:
The Dutch Payments Association coordinates and facilitates developments in the collective giro-based payment system. We are a centre of expertise for the giro-payments and we contribute to advancing, innovating and growing the collective payment system.
We also manage agreements and guidelines for collective services such as the Bank Switching Service (Overstapservice).
Legal, social and technological developments
SEPA - the Single Euro Payments Area - harmonises giro-payments within and between euro countries and eliminates differences between domestic and cross-border euro payments.
The Payments Association keeps track of legal, social and technological developments that may influence Dutch giro-based payment products and services. We follow up by consulting with members and stakeholders and we coordinate adjustments in collective giro-payments to comply with EU rules and regulations. We also manage standards and guidelines for clearing and settlement of giro-payments.
We provide research, organize and evaluate consultations and offer advice while taking the positions of stakeholders into account.
Point of contact
The Payments Association acts as a point of contact for agreements with authorities on laws and regulations related to payments, such as the Mulder Act on the collection of traffic fines, the Tax Collection Act on the collection of overdue taxes (Invorderingswet) and the Subcontractor Liability Act on the remittance of payroll taxes by subcontractors (Wet Ketenaansprakelijkheid). These laws are relevant for the central collection of fines for authorities, government requisitions and G-accounts for subcontractors.
