Betaaljournaal 12
Newsletter Dutch Payments AssociationYou probably recognise this: lots of meetings and appointments immediately after the summer vacation. Fortunately, we can now meet each other in person once in a while and no longer only via Teams, Webex or Zoom at home. It was great to see so many of you in the flesh at the Currence Beach Event, the Future of Payments, Money 20/20 or at one of our own meetings!
Of course we looked forward to welcoming everyone back to our traditional annual conference in November. Therefore I am sorry that we had to postpone the conference to a later date. After Piet’s departure last year, there was simply too much going on internally for us to properly organise the conference. But as the Dutch say: what is in the barrel does not turn sour. We will organise an exciting annual conference next year, more so because we also want to raise a glass with you to the Dutch Payments Association’s tenth anniversary.
For now, I would like to draw your attention to this new edition of the Betaaljournaal. Read about accessibility and secure banking, amongst others. And meet Chantal Frederiksz from Sisow by Buckaroo!

Accessibility in payments
Payments are rapidly digitizing. Most people consider this to be convenient, because they can manage their banking activities paperless from home. Banks and payment institutions therefore provide accessible (digital) services and products, so vulnerable groups also have easy access to their bank. This infographic shows how digitization and accessibility of payments are progressing. The infographic can also be listened to (in Dutch).
Also read about what banks do for accessibility. And watch the latest episode of betaalTV about accessibility in payments (in Dutch).
Follow-up campaign with Jandino

In February we began our mission with Jandino Asporaat to make young people in the Netherlands better aware of secure banking. With catchy sketches, Jandino wittyly confronts young people with their unsafe payment behavior, while teaching them to the 5 basic security guidelines.
Now it’s time for the next step, because we’re not there yet! Two fraud topics deserve extra attention: money mules and phishing. The format of the new skits is the same, but provides a little more explanation to get the message across. Just before a younster makes a mistake, Jandino alerts her or him about the proper safe behavior. Both videos will be brought to the attention of young adults aged 18 to 25, from October 18 to November 8 via YouTube, Instagram and Snapchat. Readers of this newsletter can already preview the new Jandino-skit about phishing (in Dutch).
Alert Online: get to work!

October is European Cyber Security Month. Alert Online partners, including banks and the Dutch Payments Association, organize various activities captioned ‘Alert Online’. They bring cyber security to the attention of employees and customers. This year the topic of Alert Online is: Get to work! This topic goes beyond increasing cyber awareness: actually get to work on cyber security! We recommend two very important activities to our constituents, Alert Online, get to work against social engineering! and Alert Online, get to work with two-factor authentication (2FA)! Check out the Alert Online activity schedule (in Dutch).
Milestone: more than 50% of online buyers uses smartphone
The e-commerce market has gained tremendous momentum as a result of Covid-19 and, with almost 91 million online purchases in Q2, there seems to be no end in sight. Around 12% of all purchases were made online in the second quarter. Just as in Q1, this is significantly higher than in the same period last year. Whether the share of online shopping remains so high now that the physical shops are fully open again, the third quarter will have to show. As the lockdown was only lifted at the end of Q2, this effect is not yet noticeable. Read full article (in Dutch).
On the job with Berend Jan Beugel
Berend Jan is press officer for the Dutch Payments Association. Lately, journalists increasingly get in touch with the Dutch Payments Association. What does his job entail? (in Dutch).
Podcast De Nieuwe Knikkers with Patricia Zwaan
The most common mistake of innovators is to use themselves as the blueprint for the average consumer. The Dutch Payments Association and Currence take a different approach. They identified 5 personas for whom they map out their payment behavior, year by year. Patricia Zwaan, market researcher, tells us about her recent surveys and her most remarkable findings. How did payment behavior change online and at the counter in the past two years? Listen to De Nieuwe Knikkers podcast (in Dutch).
Amended figures on debit card payments

The Dutch Payments Association has amended (lowered) the collective monthly, quarterly and annual figures for the number of debit card payments and the corresponding turnover for the months between September 2019 and July 2021. In this period, an average of 30 million debit card payments per month were counted twice, ranging from 25 to 40 million payments per month. Read the full clarification.
Checking in with Chantal Frederiksz
Chantal Frederiksz is Compliance and Risk Officer at Sisow, now part of Buckaroo. She talks about her legal background and how she applies that knowledge in her current position.
Meetup with cryptography expert Phil Zimmermann
On Friday 19 November at 16h00, the celebrated cryptography expert Phil Zimmermann will give a lecture to the graduates of the 2021 Applied Cryptography course from the Dutch Payments Association. Anyone else who wants to join this meetup with Phil Zimmermann is also welcome, as long as there are seats available at the Crowne Plaza hotel on the Amsterdam Zuidas. His lecture will be concluded with a Q&A and drinks offered by the Dutch Payments Association.
Zimmermann is associate professor emeritus of Cyber Security at TU Delft. He is the creator of the still widely used open source PGP encryption standard (Pretty Good Privacy), originally designed in 1991 for secure and confidential emailing. Zimmermann has received numerous technical and humanitarian awards for his pioneering work in the field of cryptography. In 2012 he was inducted into the Internet Hall of Fame, the year this gallery of honours was founded by the ISOC (Internet Society).

Doorstep-banking scams

Fraudsters pose as bank employees on the telephone. They fool bank customers into believing that their bank account was hacked. Someone from the bank supposedly needs to come the victim’s home to collect a bank card or to safeguard online banking on his or her computer. A fake banking coach, care provider or courier from the bank will then appear at their doorstep. VeiligBankieren.nl continues to warn against this doorstep-banking scam.
